THE SO-CALLED MAUSOLEUM OF PRINCE YAMATO TAKERU

THE HAKUCHORYO KOFUN

THE HAKUCHORYO KOFUN

Karusato 3-chome

This is a large scale keyhole shaped mausoleum with an entire length of 189m; a diameter of 105m in the rear round mound; a width of 160m in the front square part; and a moat 40-80m wide. It has been considered as one of the so-called three mausolea of Prince Yamato Takeru (Hakucho Sanryo). As this has the style of the late 5th century, whereas the legends suggest that he lived in the 4th century (if he really existed), there is an obvious discrepancy. Of the three Kofun mausolea, this one is considered to be the largest and most majestic.
