What is the real story behind the tragic lovers of Osome and Hisamatsu? I've been to Yachuji with my family on vacation (my family lives in Nomura) and I find it very interesting.

Answer
From 1703 to 1704, In Edo era (era of Japanese Medieval), pair suicide of lovers was in fashion in Osaka. These incidents inspired Joruri-works, which is traditional Japanese play performed by dolls and Samisen which is a kind of stringed instrument, and Kabuki-works, which is traditional Japanese play performed by costumed actors. This tragic drama was played in the play hut.

About Osome and Hisamatsu, they were fall in love in 1710. Under the severe class system of Tokugawa Government, their marriage was not allowed, because their social class was different that the family of Osome was an oil dealer and that Hisamatsu was her servant. They loved each other, but class system didn't allow them, so they decided to die and marry in the heaven. This incident became to known immediately and touched hearts of the people. After that, the incident was written as Joruri-works and Kabuki-works, and impressed to the contemporary society.

At Yachuji (Temple in Nonoue, Habikino city), there are stone monument of Osome and Hisamatsu built by the brother of Osome in 1722, and old big Sasanqua tree, which was favorite tree of Osome, given by Osome's home. Now, the Sasanqua blooms beautiful flowers, and are familiar as "The Sasanqua of matchmaking".
